Corps conducts environmental study of Sacramento River deepening    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will conduct an environmental study before resuming dredging of the Sacramento River ship channel in northern California.
   This congressionally authorized project would deepen the existing channel from 30 feet to 35 feet and widen portions of the channel to improve navigation safety.
   “Deepening of the existing ship channel is anticipated to provide transportation cost savings as a result of movement of cargo via larger deeper draft vessels and movement of project-induced tonnage,” the Corps said.
   The Sacramento River ship channel is located in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The 46.5-mile channel winds through Contra Costa, Solano, Sacramento, and Yolo counties and serves marine terminals at the Port of Sacramento. The 35-foot-deep channel would afford more efficient access to the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean, Corps said.
