UPS expands electronic-vehicle pilot project

   With the announcement Wednesday that UPS has deployed four electronic vehicles for package delivery in Rotterdam, the company has continued to roll out new technologies in small batches, hoping to learn more about adapting these sustainability approaches on a larger scale.
   In October, UPS put six electronic vehicles on the streets on Amsterdam. 
   The vehicles have a range of up to 100 kilometers, so they are being used on short routes in the cities. They come with a top speed of 80 kilometers per hour.
   “Mobility is key to the economic and social development of cities, and all cities, including Rotterdam, are faced with the challenge of finding the correct balance between economic activity and mobility. Congestion and air quality can be tackled with a range of measures, and our electric vehicles are definitely part of these, demonstrating our commitment to looking at innovative ways to improve efficiency and sustainability,” UPS’ country manager for the Netherlands, Henk Kammeraat, said in a statement.
   UPS’ current worldwide fleet of alternative-fuel vehicles stands at more than 3,100.
