HKIA posts 9.1% growth in air cargo for September

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) recorded growth in all sectors of airfreight transport, with cargo exports to Europe and Southeast Asia increasing the most during September, according to recent data from the airport.    Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) posted a 9.1 percent growth in cargo handling for September 2017 compared to September 2016, according to recent data from the airport.
    HKIA handled 430,000 metric tons of cargo in September 2017, a significant increase compared to the 394,000 metric tons handled in September 2016. Cargo exports increased 14 percent year-over-year, leading the growth in cargo volumes, the airport noted. Furthermore, cargo throughput to Europe and Southeast Asia increased the most of all the key trade regions, said HKIA.
   On a rolling 12-month basis, HKIA handled 4.87 million metric tons of cargo, an increase of 10.2 percent, while in 2016, air cargo throughout registered 4.52 million metric tons.
   Earlier this year, HKIA became the recipient of several new cargo flights, including Virgin Airlines Melbourne-Hong Kong route and Aviastar-Tu’s four-times-weekly flights from Russia to Hong Kong. Furthermore, Hong Kong-based airline Cathay Pacific purchased the remaining 40 percent stake in freighter carrier Air Hong Kong (AHK) from joint venture partner DHL.
