German air freight declined in 2012

The Federal Statistical Office of Germany reported today that air freight out of that country was down across the board last year when compared to 2011.
Shipments within Germany came to 4.3 million tons, a decline of 2.2 percent, year over year. Loaded goods declined by 1.7 percent and unloaded goods fell by 2.8 percent, year over year.
In 2011, loaded goods, unloaded goods and transshipments each showed significant gains when compared to 2010.
Last year, Germany’s largest cargo carrier, Lufthansa Cargo, saw its activity fall by 8.5 percent, year over year, to 1.7 million tons. To combat what officials called “restrained demand” worldwide, the carrier cut 8 percent of its capacity, leading to a slight, year-over-year load factor increase to 69.6 percent.
Activity to the Americas finished at 520,000 tons for the year, a 10 percent decline over 2011’s numbers. Capacity to the Americans fell by 3.4 percent, and revenue-ton kilometers declined by 6.5 percent. Load factor declined 2.3 points.
Lufthansa’s year-over-year tonnage numbers showed the most significant decline in the Asia-Pacific region and the smallest change in the Africa and Middle East region. – Jon Ross
