CUSTOMS TAKES APPLICATIONS FOR COBRA FEES ADVISORY COMMITTEE

CUSTOMS TAKES APPLICATIONS FOR COBRA FEES ADVISORY COMMITTEE    U.S. Customs is accepting applications from the industry to join its COBRA Fees Advisory Committee.
This advisory committee was created under the 1985 Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) to advise Customs on issues related to performance of its inspection services. This advice covers the time periods during which inspection services are performed, the proper number and deployment of inspectors, and fee amounts.
The committee will consist of the deputy commissioner of Customs as chairman. Two senior Customs officials from the Offices of Finance and Field Operations will serve as technical representatives to the chairman.
Eight industry members from various transport modes, including railroads, trucks, barges, cargo vessels, passenger ships, general aviation and passenger aircraft, will participate on the committee. Two executives are generally selected from the passenger airline industry.
The COBRA Fees Advisory Committee meets four times a year over a two-year term, in accordance with the Federal Advisory Committee Act. An occasional meeting may be held at the discretion of the chairman and members.
Applications from the industry will be accepted by Customs 30 days from its expected posting in the Federal Register June 22. For more information, contact Richard Coleman of Customs’ Trade Compliance Team at (202) 927-0563.
