Main LAX access road to suffer construction through 2009

Main LAX access road to suffer construction through 2009 Vehicle traffic in and out of Los Angeles International Airport will get worse before it gets better — at least for the next two years.
   City officials broke ground last week on an $11.6 million expansion of the airport's major access road, with construction set to last through the summer of 2009. The project will widen Sepulveda Boulevard along the approach to the airport. The stretch, which is also one of the area's busiest business districts, will be expanded from three lanes to four in each direction. When the project's completed drivers will gain an additional lane in each direction, and parking along the street for local businesses will be better configured.
   Construction will be limited to 7 a.m.-4 p.m. during the workweek with a holiday break scheduled from Nov. 16 through Jan. 4.
   In addition to being a popular shortcut for local commuters on the nearby and heavily congested Harbor Freeway (Interstate 405), the stretch of Sepulveda Boulevard being worked on is also the primary egress point for trucks hauling cargo out of the airport.
