U.S. Sugar to use rail technology for harvest season    U.S. Sugar has completed implementation of a new computer technology for use in rail moves that aims to help it increase efficiency during the 2006 harvest season.
   Florida-based U.S. Sugar and the rail technology company RMI said they successfully completed implementation of the RailConnect Transportation Management System on March 1. The companies had been attempting to implement the system last fall, but due to extensive damage from Hurricane Wilma, the entire operation was shut down for two months and the process was delayed as U.S. Sugar worked to recover from hurricane damage.
   For years, U.S. Sugar employees have used hand-written cards to track car movements during the cane harvest. These cards were filled out by the train crews in the field and then handed off at the mill to be completed by employees in various divisions. Now, all car movement events will be captured in near real-time in the field, improving communication and alleviating clerical support demands.
