St. Lawrence Seaway cargo down in September

St. Lawrence Seaway cargo down in September Total cargo on the St. Lawrence Seaway system (Welland Canal and Montreal/Lake Ontario sections) was down 13.4 percent to 28 million tons as of Sept. 30, from 32.4 million tons a year ago.
   Vessel transits for the current navigation season are down 7.7 percent to 2,929 from 3,174.
   Meanwhile, shipments on the Great Lakes by U.S.-flag members of the Lake Carriers' Association declined 7 percent in September to 11.1 million tons.
   The Cleveland-based LCA represents 18 American companies operating 63 U.S.-flag vessels. Through the third quarter, U.S.-flag carriage stands at 73.8 million tons, a 5.4 percent decrease from the same point in 2006, the LCA said.
