DCT Gdansk handles biggest ship

DCT Gdansk handles biggest ship The DCT Gdansk container terminal in Poland on Monday handled its largest vessel since operations started in June 2007.
   The 2,732-TEU Racha Bhum called at the terminal after being delivered by Polish shipyard Stocznia Gdynia to Singapore’s Regional Container Lines (RCL). The ship, which was under charter to Hapag-Lloyd for the delivery voyage to Asia, loaded 1,002 empty containers, equivalent to more than 1,500 TEUs. Using three ship-to-shore cranes, the terminal recorded an average loading rate of 88.1 moves per hour.
   As well as being the biggest ship so far handled by DCT Gdansk, Racha Bhum became the first vessel to load containers there for direct carriage to Asia.
   DCT Gdansk Chief Executive Officer Boris Wenzel said the loading of the vessel in 12 hours proves that the terminal is ready to handle deep-sea ships should shipping lines decide to call directly into the Baltic region. The new Polish terminal averages about 10,000 TEUs per month with Intra European services from Containerships and Inter Marine Container Lines (IMCL).
