The project platform, titled RAILChain, will allow shippers to securely exchange bill of lading information and settle freight, repair, and lease costs via the platform. RAILChain will serve as a secure network link between shippers using Bourque’s suite of rail applications, including RAILTRAC, RateServer, RAILAcct, and their rail trading partners.
The RAILChain project builds upon previous design elements of NaviChain, a blockchain network designed for intermodal chemical shipments by Bourque’s partner, Tank and Container Management Systems (TCMS), said the logistics company.
Initially, RAILChain will be developed using the Ethereum platform, but the future goal is to interchange with other platforms as blockchain technology evolves, Bourque said.
According to Bourque, several shipper clients expressed interest in blockchain technology, and those shippers will be the first participants in a proof of concept trial.
“We are excited to investigate this new technology on behalf of our clients,” said Steve Bourque, president of Bourque Logistics. “By working now to make our rail operations and freight payment systems blockchain compatible, our clients will have options to benefit from this technology as it matures and is adopted within the rail industry.”
