DHL gets block space on Polar Air Cargo Asia-U.S. flights DHL Express said Monday it will begin a block space agreement for transpacific air service between North America and Asia with Polar Air Cargo.
   The inaugural flight will take off from Hong Kong and arrive at DHL's air hub in Wilmington, Ohio.
   The block space agreement guarantees DHL Express access to six Polar Air Cargo Boeing 747-400F aircraft to serve eight key destinations in Asia and the United States. DHL said it will utilize Polar Air Cargo's scheduled weekday flights from Los Angeles, Wilmington and New York via Anchorage to the Asian destinations of Hong Kong, Shanghai, Seoul and Tokyo. In addition, the partnership also covers an extended weekend schedule, with flights to Honolulu, Sydney, Sharjah and Leipzig.
   John Mullen, chief executive officer of DHL Express, said the addition of JFK allows DHL to extend its Time Definite service from Asia to the U.S. East Coast.
   DHL also said it is increasing the frequency of its dedicated Air Hong Kong flights from Hong Kong to Nagoya, Taipei, Seoul and Singapore from Monday. Flights to these cities have been increased to six times per week, up from five.
   Air Hong Kong, a 60/40 joint venture between Cathay Pacific and DHL, now operates four additional A300-600 flights on these routes, representing an increased dedicated capacity of 45 tons per week on each of the four routes.
