Los Angeles port to enter Rose Parade float

Los Angeles port to enter Rose Parade float Soot-colored sunflower seeds shooting out of palm-frond-covered smoke stacks? Perhaps coconut husk waves lapping gently against rose-petal coated containerships?
   The public will only have to wait until Jan. 1 to find out now that the Port of Los Angeles has approved plans to spend $350,000 on a port-themed float that will represent the city in the 2008 Tournament of Roses Parade.
   Current budget troubles threatened the city's participation in the annual Pasadena event, where the city has been represented by at least one of its departments for the past 109 years, the longest streak by any city involved in the parade.
   Given that this year's Rose Parade will have an international theme, the port stepped in and offered to bear the costs. The float will be entitled 'The Place Where the World Comes Together' and showcase the port's economic impacts and newfound environmental awareness.
   Phoenix Decorating Co. of Pasadena, who has designed award-winning floats in the past, will be handling the work for the port.
