The bulk of the growth came from the Port of Long Beach, which handled 619,512 TEUs in April, up 15 percent over the 538,501 TEUs handled a year ago.
Import container volume at the Port of Long Beach jumped 18.5 percent to 321,044 TEUs, from 270,920 in April 2005. Exports improved 3.9 percent to 111,755 TEUs, from 107,609 TEUs with empties rising 16.7 percent to 186,713 TEUs.
The port of Los Angeles reported a 5.1 percent rise in its container throughput to 673,394 TEUs in April from 636,973 TEUs last year. Loaded inbound traffic increased 11 percent to 365,188 TEUs, while loaded outbound volume went up 6 percent to 113,398 TEUs. The number of empty containers handled at the port dropped 3 percent to 194,807 TEUs.
After four months, the total number of containers shipped through the two ports has risen 7 percent to a record 10.4 million TEUs.
