NS breaks ground on Memphis terminal

NS breaks ground on Memphis terminal    Norfolk Southern said it has begun work on a $105 million intermodal terminal near Memphis.
   The 380-acre Memphis Regional Intermodal Facility in Rossville, Tenn., is expected to open late next year and will eventually have annual capacity for 327,000 containers.
   It is one of four new terminals the railroad is building along the $2.5 billion Crescent Corridor, a high-capacity intermodal freight rail route between the South and the Northeast.
   The railroad believes it will divert 1.3 million longhaul trucks from interstate highways annually.
   The terminal will utilize gate and terminal automation technology to shorten the waiting time for trucks entering the terminal, thereby reducing exhaust emissions and improving truck driver productivity. Additionally, modern low-emission cranes will operate within the terminal.
