Fresno food distributor opens Ontario facility Fresno-based food-service distribution company Saladino's Inc. said Wednesday it has opened a new Southern California distribution center that will boost the six-decade-old firm to more than 400 employees and 100 trucks.
   The 100,000-square-foot center, located in Ontario about 40 miles due east of downtown Los Angeles, is the second distribution center for the firm, which delivers foodstuffs and supplies to pizzerias, restaurants and delicatessens in California, Oregon, Nevada and Idaho.
   Financial details for the new facility, which utilizes 'green' technology to cut energy use by up to 60 percent, were not available. Prices for industrial property in the area are averaging near $100 per square foot with less than 7 percent of existing structures listed as vacant.
   The Subway sandwich chain is one of the firm's largest Northern California customers. The Ontario expansion, President Craig Saladino told the Fresno Bee, would allow the firm to take on more of Subway's Southern California business and offer more coverage to other customers.
