BNSF releases green report

In the document, the railroad said it has the most environmentally friendly and youngest array of locomotives in the United States.    BNSF released its maiden sustainability report last week to comply with the G4 guidelines laid out by the Global Reporting Initiative.
   In the report, BNSF said it has the most environmentally friendly and youngest array of locomotives in the United States; according to the carrier, 40 percent of its fleet under 10 years old. It also touted its status as the first railroad in North America to use wide-span electric cranes and the fact that it has installed stop-start devices on more than 90 percent of its locomotives, a feat that will save 8,000 gallons of fuel per year per vehicle.  
   “We are pleased to be able to issue our first report based on the GRI’s latest guiding principles,” BNSF’s vice president of environmental, John Lovenburg, stated, “as we continue to grow our business in a safe and sustainable manner by investing in our network and the development of our employees while contributing positively to our communities, the country and our economy.”
