The point of collision was south of Hong Kong, according to news reports, and the search for survivors is underway.
One crew member was rescued early Monday after the collision, which occurred around 2:30 a.m. local time.
The sunken ship is the Zhong Xing 2, which had a crew of 12, and was transporting cement.
The Marshall Islands-registered container ship MOL Motivator was sailing from Hong Kong to a nearby Shenzhen port.
