SoCal air regulators approve CNG truck pilot program The South Coast Air Quality Management District plans to sponsor a demonstration project testing the efficacy of compressed natural gas trucks at the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.
   The agency's governing board approved the project, which will see four CNG trucks put into drayage service at the two ports, on Wednesday. The $2 million costs will be shared between SCAQMD and partners AutoCar, California Cartage Co. and SoCalGas. As part of the project, a small refueling station will also be built to supply the project vehicles.
   According to SCAQMD officials, the project is the first of its kind, and it is hoped that it would lead to further conversion to CNG trucks by the local drayage industry.
      The SCAQMD goal is to see half of the nearly 19,000 trucks in the local drayage fleet converted to natural gas.
