A resident of Scarsdale, Ariz., he had worked as a cryptanalyst in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II before co-founding Seatrain Lines in 1951. The company operated tankers and container ships, and constructed supertankers in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
At the time of his death he served on the board of directors at Emisphere Technologies Inc., a biopharmaceutical company he co-founded in 1986.
