DHL expands operations in southwestern U.S.

Logistics company DHL Global Forwarding has expanded its presence in key Southern border states in order to satisfy the needs of local customers that require airfreight, ocean freight, customs brokerage, warehouse and domestic services, the company said Monday.
The six stations that have opened in recent weeks form a portion of DHL’s strategic plan to grow its freight forwarding services in main cities across the U.S., the company said in a statement.
“We are continuously searching for ways to provide more access to our services for our customers, and we feel that investing in San Diego, Tucson (Arizona), Nogales (Arizona), El Paso, Laredo (Texas) and McAllen (Texas) stations is integral to that goal,” DHL Global Forwarding CEO David Goldberg explained.
DHL said it’s new presence in San Diego is related to the company’s close links to telecommunications, biotechnology, software and electronics industries that played a part in the 33 percent export growth in the southern California city between 2006 and 2016.
Nogales and Tucson, Ariz., both part of the Arizona Sun Corridor mega region, also were earmarked as key locations, due to their proximity to important markets like Mexico and California, DHL explained.
Similarly, DHL said that El Paso stood out due to it being the 10th largest exporter in the U.S., as well as being home to various industries, including military, food production and apparel.
“McAllen, Texas’ cross border history and status as a southern Texas/northern Mexico retail trade center were also integral in DHL’s decision to expand its presence there,” the company said. “Laredo, Texas, with a 2015 export value of about $8 billion, was equally noteworthy.”
“These six stations are located in some of the most trade-driven metropolitan areas along the U.S.-Mexico border,” Alejandro Palacios, head of Southern Border Stations for DHL Global Forwarding, explained. “As such, DHL’s strategic investment will enhance our customers’ ability to flourish in these markets.”
DHL Global Forwarding’s new Southern border stations collectively employ 300 employees, and are all located near international airports and border crossings. To date, DHL has a total of 37 stations across the country.
