The move is a normal step in the process, and officials still expect the deal to close in the third quarter.
American and US Air announced the potential $11 billion merger, which would create the largest carrier in the United States, last month.
The combined carrier will have a network of 6,700 daily flights to 340 destinations, giving American a strong international foothold. The two carrier’s networks complement each other, with minimal shared routes.
The merger will also allow American to operate from a strong financial foundation, continue to make investments and provide some clarity regarding labor agreements, American Chief Executive Officer Tom Horton said during a conference call announcing the move.
Even with a robust passenger presence, a combined American and US Air would rank far below the top domestic carrier of cargo. United Continental’s cargo revenue topped $990 million in 2012.
If regulators approve the merger, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York and shareholders of US Airways must also approve the deal. – Jon Ross
