Congressmen call for further study of LNG Terminal off Long Island

Congressmen call for further study of LNG Terminal off Long Island U.S. Reps. Steve Israel, D-N.Y., Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., and Tim Bishop, D-N.Y., said language has been included in the 2008 energy spending bill that would require the Energy Department to study safety concerns related to liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker spills.
A floating LNG facility, Broadwater, has been proposed for placement on the Long Island Sound.
Israel said the Energy Department has left out “some of the most widely identified hazards relating to a liquefied natural gas spill in its study on tanker safety.”
Language inserted into the bill would “ensure that there is adequate review before offshore LNG facilities are sited,” he said. The bill's language would direct the Energy Department to include a number of research areas identified by Government Accountability Office in a recent study on LNG.
“Significant security and safety concerns surround the operation of LNG terminals,” DeLauro said. “As the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and MarAd (Maritime Administration)-Coast Guard consider the nearly 40 proposals for new LNG facilities currently before them, a decision that affects the safety, security and economic livelihood of our constituents should not be made with incomplete information.”
