American, the fourth-largest freight carrier in August, saw its monthly cargo volumes increase to 13,314 tons. Volume leader LAN Airlines saw a 4.3 percent decrease to 16,690 tons, while second-place Arrow Air dropped 7.7 percent to 15,080 tons. UPS was third with a 3.7 percent increase to 14,550 tons, and Cielos Airlines gained only 1.2 percent to reach 12,134 tons and rank fifth.
Overall, freight tonnage totaled 169,128 tons in August, according to MDAD. That included 144,000 tons of international cargo, of which 125,000 tons was handled by cargo-only carriers.
Through the first eight months of the year, the airport's gross landed cargo tonnage is 576,248 tons, up 2.39 percent from the same period a year ago.
