OSG names world’s biggest LNG carrier

OSG names world’s biggest LNG carrier New York-listed Overseas Shipholding Group Inc. Sunday named the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier at Hyundai Heavy Industries’ shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea.
   The Al Gattara is the first in a series of four “Q-Flex” LNG carriers to be delivered to OSG Nakilat, the joint venture between OSG and Qatargas Transport Co. (Nakilat).
   The ships in the series will each be able to transport 216,000 cubic meters of LNG, about 40 percent more than the standard LNG vessels in service today.
   The ships also feature a first-of-its-kind onboard reliquefication plant, which cools boil-off gas and converts it back to liquid for return to the tanks. Safety features include redundant systems such as dual propellers and rudders and environmentally friendly, low-emission electronically controlled diesel engines.
   The second ship in the new fleet, the Tembek, constructed by Samsung Heavy Industries in Geoje Island, South Korea, will be named Tuesday.
