Maersk helps Navy with energy conservation

Maersk helps Navy with energy conservation
The U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, has awarded a contract to Maersk Line Ltd. to assess and apply advanced waste heat recovery technology to the Navy's Military Sealift Command ships.
In the first phase of a two-phase approach, Maersk Line Ltd. will conduct a detailed study to determine which Military Sealift Command ships will generate the greatest return on investment by using waste heat recovery technology. Based on these findings, the company may then lead the installation of these systems.
Advanced waste heat recovery systems capture energy from the hot exhaust of ship engines and use the heat as a source of power to reduce fuel consumption, which is a ship’s single-largest operating cost. The systems also reduce emission of carbon dioxide, sulfur and nitrous oxides, and particulate matter.
Maersk Line Ltd.'s parent, the A.P. Moller – Maersk Group (Maersk), installed its first waste heat recovery system about decade ago and has since installed it on numerous vessels across its 1,300-ship fleet. The carrier now installs these systems in every new ship it builds.
