The New Orleans Times Picayune reports that U.S. Sen. David Vitter, R-La. announced Wednesday that the Army Corps of Engineers has agreed to an expedited plan for closing the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet, popularly known by its abbreviation MR-GO.
The paper reports that the Corps of Engineers had been waiting for a special appropriation from Congress to close the channel, but Vitter said he has convinced the Army to tap earlier appropriations for the $24 million job.
The New Orleans paper said the Army would build an earthen dam across canal at Bayou la Loutre in St. Bernard Parish, effectively closing the channel.
The 76-mile channel provided a short cut from the Gulf of Mexico to New Orleans.
But it was lightly used and during Hurricane Katrina levees along it were breached at multiple locations. Storm surge from the MR-GO was also blamed for breaches of the Industrial Canal’s levees.
