BPG Properties Ltd., a Philadelphia area private equity real estate fund manager, is proposing to build what it is calling the North Carolina Port Industrial Facility in the Leland Industrial Park.
The developer said the project was motivated by growing container volumes from China moving through the Port of Wilmington from two liner services operated by the CKYH Alliance of container-shipping lines.
'The Port of Wilmington is the ideal location for this type of facility due to the state's growing population, great highway network and its central location between the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions,' said Dan DiLella Jr., vice president of BPG.
'Industrial users, particularly big box retailers, want their distribution centers to be located as close to a port as possible to avoid high transportation costs and to improve distribution. Finding available space within 10 miles of other East Coast ports has become increasingly more difficult. BPG is encouraged by the double-digit annual growth rate in container volumes of the Port of Wilmington. The North Carolina Port Industrial Facility should present an excellent opportunity for end-users looking to improve their global supply chain and logistics model,' he added.
