Hong Kong Airport reports slight bump in cargo traffic

The airport handled 2.1 million tons of cargo for the first half of 2015, up 0.6 percent from the same period last year.    The Hong Kong Airport handled 2.1 million tons of cargo for the first half of 2015, up 0.6 percent from the same period last year, according to a statement from the airport. Cargo handled includes import, export and transshipment (counted twice) cargo, and excludes air mail.
Throughput for the first half of the year was affected by a drop in exports but is expected to consolidate for the rest of the year, the Hong Kong Airport said.
On a rolling 12-month basis, the airport handled 4.4 million tons of cargo, up 3.2 percent from the previous 12 months.
The airport handled 349,000 tons of cargo from 4,380 cargo flights in June alone, a year-over-year decrease of 3.5 percent and 2.9 percent, respectively. The decline was primarily caused by a 5 percent year-over-year drop in transshipments and a 4 percent decrease in exports. Imports were up 1 percent year-over-year. Traffic to and from Southeast Asia, Mainland China and Europe also underperformed in the month of June, with traffic suppressed by the a weak Eurozone economy and a decrease in Asia Pacific imports and exports, according to the airport.
