Container transshipments boost Colombo’s throughput The Port of Colombo handled 2.23 million TEUs during the first eight months of 2007 reflecting a 12.2 percent year-on-year increase, reported the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.
   The increase was mainly due to a 14 percent growth in container transshipment throughput (including re-stow), which accounts for 76.5 percent of the port’s volume. Colombo’s domestic box volume was up 6.8 percent.
   The number of containerships calling at the Sri Lankan port by the end of August increased 4.4 percent to 2,419.
   Total cargo tonnage handled during the first eight months increased 10.1 percent to 28.7 million tons, although breakbulk declined 15.5 percent and liquid-bulk slipped 5.6 percent.
