Slow-steaming will be used on the line's ZCS pendulum service between Asia, North America and the Mediterranean, and also on its EMX service, which connects the Far East and Indian Subcontinent with the Mediterranean.
The ZCS is has operated with 15 vessels (average vessel size 4,900 TEUs, according to ComPair Data), while the EMX is operated with 10 4,300-TEU vessels on average. Zim will add a 4,250-TEU ship to each service.
The line said the services would retain fixed-day schedules, adding that there will be 'only minor changes in transit times.' According to ComPair Data, the ZCS has a 103-day round-trip schedule while the EMX has a 70-day rotation.
'Additional time is distributed among the legs along the route, with minimal effect in the dominant legs (up to 1.5 additional days),' a Zim spokesperson told American Shipper.
Zim said it estimates a 13 percent reduction in fuel consumption on the two services, with carbon dioxide emissions also reduced about 13 percent per year, and nitrogen oxides emissions reduced about 46 percent.
The ZCS has a rotation of Haifa, Piraeus, Livorno, Genoa, Tarragona, Halifax, New York, Savannah, Kingston, Panama Canal, Los Angeles, Oakland, Da Chan Bay, Hong Kong, Ningbo, Shanghai, Busan, Balboa, Panama Canal, Kingston, Savannah, New York, Halifax, Tarragona and Haifa.
The EMX has a rotation of Busan, Shanghai, Ningbo, Da Chan Bay, Port Kelang, Colombo, Suez Canal, Haifa, Ashdod, Izmit, Novorossiysk, Constanta, Ambarli, Istanbul, Haifa, Suez Canal, Nhava Sheva, Colombo, Port Kelang, Da Chan Bay, Xiamen and Busan.
