Port Everglades’ throughput up 22% in 2005 fiscal year

Port Everglades’ throughput up 22% in 2005 fiscal year    Box volume at the port of Port Everglades, Fla., increased 22 percent to 797,238 TEUs from 653,628 TEUs in the port’s fiscal year ended Sept. 30.
“Container volumes exceeded our expectations,” said Phillip C. Allen, Port Everglades’ interim port director. “We can thank our new shipping and marine terminal partners who have increased our throughput volumes considerably. This growth is in addition to the increases in throughput being felt by our longtime operators.”
In the last year, the port has welcomed two new marine terminal operators: Florida International Terminals (F.I.T.) and Mediterranean Shipping Co.’s terminal management company Port Everglades Terminals.
The port reported that Port Everglades Terminals handled 83,304 TEUs at the new 39-acre dockside terminal since it opened in December 2004. In its first three months of operation (July through September 2005), F.I.T. handled 13,790 TEUs.
Port Everglades also reported that Crowley Liner Services, the biggest user of the port, increased its box volume 11 percent to 220,942 TEUs in the 2005 fiscal year from 198,939 TEUs in the year earlier period.
