GEORGIA PORTS CONTINUE TO SET RECORD VOLUMES    The Georgia Port Authority's Port of Savannah reported a 5.3-percent increase in total cargo tonnage handled in the 2001 fiscal year, ended June 30.
   Container tonnage increased by 10.4 percent to 7.7 million tons, while throughput topped 1 million TEUs, a 20-percent increase over the previous fiscal year.
   General cargo tonnage rose 3.4 percent to 1.5 million tons, while bulk cargo volume fell 15.2 percent to 937,295 tons.
   Including volumes from the port of Brunswick and inland barge terminals at Bainbridge and Columbus, the GPA's terminals handled 12.7 million tons of cargo in fiscal 2001, an increase of 4.7 percent. It marked the 14th consecutive year the state ports set record volumes.
   Container volume via Savannah's Garden City Terminal accounted for 76 percent of the total tonnage. Automobile volumes through Savannah and Brunswick rose 12.7 percent to 224,309 vehicles.
