U.S. awards grant to study East African rail corridor improvements    The U.S. Trade and Development Agency has awarded a $210,450 grant to Central East African Railways Co., a privately owned company based in Limbe, Malawi, to fund a study on the Chipata Rail Extension and Inland Terminal Project in Zambia.
   If implemented, the agency said the project would extend the regional Nacala Transportation Corridor, a rail project underway to connect landlocked Malawi to the Port of Nacala in Mozambique, into Eastern Zambia.
   USTDA said the development of the corridor is important for “on-going regional famine relief efforts.” It also considers the construction of a dry freight terminal that would handle both container and bulk freight transfers at Chipata.
