Port of Wilmington, N.C. teams up with Enviva

The new Enviva terminal at the Port of Wilmington will export wood pellets to Europe, and is just part of the port’s modernization plan.    The wood pellet domes at Enviva’s terminal at the Port of Wilmington, N.C. are now operational, with the first loading of exports to Europe last week, according to the North Carolina State Ports Authority.
The Enviva terminal is equipped with two storage domes that can hold up to 45,000 metric tons of wood pellets each.
Enviva signed a 21-year lease with two, five-year renewal options with the port authority.
Cliff Pyron, Senior Manager, External Affairs at the North Carolina State Ports Authority, told American Shipper Enviva’s domes at the port were inflated last summer, with construction continuing up until December of this year.
The terminal is a public-private partnership and the facility was completely funded by Enviva, Pyron said.
Overall, the new terminal is part of the port’s modernization plan, which also included the opening of a cold storage facility in August, and completion of the turning basin expansion in July, allowing the port to handle 10,000-TEU vessels. The port has also started the replacement of Berth 8, which will allow it to handle two, 10,000-TEU ships simultaneously, and has also completed an order for additional new Panamax container cranes.
