ICAO opens ATM facility in Beijing

   The International Civil Aviation Organization has opened an office in Beijing dedicated to improving air traffic management (ATM) procedures in the region. The regional sub office is the organization’s first in the city.
   At the new office, officials will establish performance-driven criteria that will strive to meet Asia’s future capacity and ATM issues. Much of this capacity pressure will come from passenger activity, as ICAO has predicted that the region will boast twice the amount of North America’s passenger volume by the end of the next decade, with China being the leader in passenger volume. 
   Raymond Benjamin, ICAO’s secretary general, said the new facility will help achieve performance management goals set by the organization.
   “Important near-term objectives to be pursued include the design, validation and deployment of [performance-based navigation] procedures in Bangladesh, Myanmar and the Pacific Islands; a path-finding initiative for airspace optimization in East Asia and regional targets surrounding Flexible Use of Airspace aiding improved civil/military coordination; and, lastly, a workshop on and approval of further targets aiding the regional implementation of air traffic flow management and collaborative decision making capacities,” he said. – Jon Ross
