AA Cargo enhances temperature-control program

The cargo segment of American Airlines will implement Envirotainer’s RKN e1 and RAP e2 containers to its lineup of healthcare shipping solutions starting Nov. 1.    American Airlines Cargo will add temperature-controlled air cargo container manufacturer Envirotainer’s RKN e1 and RAP e2 containers to its lineup of healthcare shipping solutions starting Nov. 1, the air freight carrier said.
   The RKN e1 unit uses compressor cooling and electric heating for shipments that require additional temperature control throughout transport.
   The larger RAP e2 unit is an actively temperature-controlled container that features an insulated shell, which is designed to provide necessary protection for the shipment of highly-sensitive healthcare products. The container can handle any set temperature between 0 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit and 77 degrees Fahrenheit) to transport medication worldwide.
   American said it is officially the first U.S. passenger carrier granted approval for carriage of the RAP e2 unit and to provide the full suite of Envirotainer products to customers.
   “Envirotainer was our original Active solutions partner at the cold chain launch of the ExpediteTC program, and it’s fantastic to now have the full range of their products available for our customers’ temperature-controlled logistics needs,” American’s Manager of Cold Chain Strategy Tom Grubb said in a statement. “With these options, American continues enhancement of the ExpediteTC service offerings and can provide the capabilities desired by our customers.”
   ExpediteTC is a temperature-controlled service offered globally by the airfreight carrier.
   The service offers both active and passive cold chain solutions. The active solution involves using advanced, temperature-controlled containers that actively regulate temperature, while the passive solution is designed for shipments that require additional sensitivity to temperature during transport and utilizes cold packs and dry ice.
