New MIA facility will help airfreight movements Miami International Airport has opened its new International General Aviation Center, a multiuse facility that will help speed air cargo movements and specialty passenger flights.
   The facility, which replaces cramped trailers that had been used for years, is used to direct all-cargo aircraft to the airport's specialized airfreight facilities across the airport from the passenger terminals. The aviation center also serves as the customs clearance area for the flight crews of all-cargo aircraft.
   With the high volume of express carrier feeder flights coming into MIA each night, as well as the regular all-cargo flights, the old facility was typically jammed up with flight crews. The conditions sometimes created scheduling problems for crews and required additional crew assignments.
   The aviation center also handles charter flights ranging from sports teams to private jets, as well as smaller international passenger charters with less than 30 passengers.
