According to news reports, workers surrounded the port’s administrative headquarters and abandoned waiting ships. Union officials reportedly said the incident was the result of a failure to implement a collective bargaining agreement between the union and management last year.
Officials reportedly had persuaded protesters to return to work, but some threatened to strike again if concerns weren’t addressed Friday.
The port handles imports such as fuel for Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, Congo and Somalia.
