While most of this gain came from increases in the passenger market, Delta’s cargo activity did well in January, showing a modest improvement over results from January 2012. Cargo ton miles ended the month at 175,124, a 0.5-percent year-over-year increase.
Delta is the first of the major U.S. cargo carriers to report results for January. Last month, the International Air Transport Association predicted a 1.4 percent growth in cargo demand worldwide for 2013. Last year, North American carriers on average saw cargo demand decline by 0.5 percent. – Jon Ross
