Former Evergreen exec Hsieh takes chairman role at Yang Ming

Taiwanese ocean carrier Yang Ming Transport Corp. named former Evergreen Line executive Bronson Hsieh as its new chairman.    Taiwan-based container line Yang Ming Transport Corp. said Thursday it has named former Evergreen Line executive Bronson Hsieh as its new chairman.
   Hsieh has long been a fixture at Evergreen, also based in Taiwan, but left his position as vice chairman of the line in March, according to news reports in Asia. A succession battle has been underway at Evergreen after its longtime chairman Chang Yung-fa died in January.
   Yang Ming lauded Hsieh’s liner experience of 40 years, which included stints in Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, Hong Kong and China.
   “Facing several business cycles, he could always overcome all the obstacles during the recessions,” the carrier said.
   According to the maritime analyst Alphaliner, Evergreen is the fifth biggest liner carrier by fleet capacity, while Yang Ming is the 10th largest. Both carriers are currently members of the CKYHE Alliance, but Evergreen is due to join the OCEAN 3 Alliance with COSCO Container Line and OOCL in April 2017. Yang Ming is due to join a new alliance, called THE Alliance, also in April 2017. THE Alliance is headlined by those carriers orphaned by the dissolution of the G6 Alliance.
