APM Terminals picks Navis to automate future Portsmouth, Va. Terminal

APM Terminals picks Navis to automate future Portsmouth, Va. Terminal    APM Terminals North America, the terminal management arm of A.P. Moller-Maersk, has picked Navis to automate its container handling operations at its future terminal in Portsmouth, Va.
Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
APM Terminals is the world's third-largest container terminal operator with more than 35 terminals. The company first started using Navis software in 1993 at its Long Beach Maersk Pacific terminal in Southern California, and has expanded to using the software at more than 20 APM terminals.
In a statement Wednesday, APM said it will rely on Navis to integrate its software with the Portsmouth terminal’s specific operational requirements.
The 291-acre greenfield terminal site at Portsmouth is expected to be finished by 2007. The terminal gate complex will have 24 lanes in phase 1 with the capacity to expand to 32 lanes. The berth is designed to accept up to 12 quay cranes. A railhead will be built at the northwestern corner of the terminal with the ability to have 12 tracks if necessary.
