Dongguan terminal lands first service    A year-old 1 million-TEU capacity container terminal in Dongguan has landed its first major call from a container line.
   Singapore-based carrier PIL called at the terminal, in which PSA International has a 20 percent stake, in the middle of September, according to the maritime news service Alphaliner.
   The PIL intra-Asia service has a rotation of Singapore, Hong Kong, Huangpu (Guangzhou), Kaohsiung, Taichung, Keelung, Dongguan, Nansha and Singapore.
   The terminal directly connects carriers to the city of Dongguan, the heart of the Pearl River manufacturing region. But according to the report, it has suffered from stiff competition from other major ports in South China — notably, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Nansha, and river terminals around Guangzhou, which lies upriver from Dongguan.
   There's also fairly direct competition from Da Chan Bay, the newest terminal complex in the Port of Shenzhen and closest container gateway to Dongguan.
