Two containerships collide off Malaysia

The 4,250-TEU APL Denver collided with the 2,495-TEU Wan Hai 301 late last night near Pasir Gudang Port in Johor, Malaysia, causing fuel to spill from one of the ship’s bunker tanks, according to Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore.    Two containerships operated by ocean carriers CNC Line and Wan Hai collided late last night off Pasir Gudang Port in Johor, Malaysia, according to a statement from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).
   The 4,250-TEU APL Denver, currently operated by CNC, collided with the 2,495-TEU Wan Hai 301, causing a bunker tank on the APL Denver to rupture and spill around 300 metric tons of fuel. The Johor Port Authority (JPA) has deployed four anti-pollution vessels and an oil boom around the APL Denver in an attempt to contain the spill.
   No injuries have been reported, and traffic in the East Johor Straits and both ports remains unaffected. Both MPA and JPA have initiated investigations into the cause of the incident.
   According to ocean carrier schedule and capacity database BlueWater Reporting, the APL Denver currently serves on the joint CNC, TS Lines, COSCO and KMTC intra-Asia loop KCM2, on which CMA CGM, ANL and Heung-A also purchase slots.
   The Wan Hai 301 serves on the carrier’s KSS service between Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea, on which Evergreen Line takes slots.
