Containership dry docked in Brooklyn

Containership dry docked in Brooklyn Ship spotters will get to see an unusual site this week as a Horizon Lines containership slips beneath the Brooklyn Bridge, after completing dry dock maintenance at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
   Horizon said it was the first dry docking of a containership at a New York yard in 14 years.
   Horizon Producer, a 720-foot, 1,751-TEU ship built in 1974, was refurbished by GMD Shipyard. The ship is deployed in Horizon’s service to Puerto Rico.
   The Brooklyn Navy Yard on the East River was opened in 1801, and was a premier shipbuilding facility from the Civil War through the Korean War. It was shuttered in 1966 in a wave of military base closings.
   New York City purchased it in 1967 and it reopened in 1971 as a city-owned 300-acre industrial park. Today it has about 230 tenants and 5,000 employees.
   Within the complex, GMD operates a ship repair facility that has three graving docks, two of which are 1,092 feet by 150 feet by 36 feet, and one is 280 feet by 66 feet, as well as a 1,080-foot-by-116-foot wet berth.
