Seminar to teach Japanese companies about C-TPAT    The Japan Machinery Center Association for Trade and Investment, which represents large industrial producers such as Canon, Nippon Steel, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Fujitsu, will host the first seminar in Japan to educate companies about the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism and how to meet the cargo security program’s criteria.
   The seminar, to be held Feb. 1 in Tokyo, is designed to prepare Japanese companies for on-site visits by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers checking to make sure appropriate security measures are in place at foreign plants.
   The trade association has engaged the U.S. trade law firm of Pisani & Roll to conduct the seminar. Japan Customs is expected to attend the event.
   The event highlights the increasing impact C-TPAT is having on foreign suppliers who are under pressure from U.S. importers, including often a foreign company’s own U.S. marketing arm, to have strong internal controls for plant access, packing containers, transportation, documentation and personnel. Importers who are recognized as having secure supply chains are eligible for reduced inspections.
