Guam port names Guerrero new general manager The Port Authority of Guam's governing board Thursday appointed Glenn Leon Guerrero to fill the general manager position at the island's burgeoning commercial port.
   Guerrero, an employee of Shell Guam with a background in business management, was selected by the board from a short list of five candidates.
   Port officials pointed to Guerrero's 'business acumen' and his intimate knowledge of the local community and port operations. The board also said Guerrero can get the port 'team going,' and that he will be able to 'rally them and get what’s needed for the port of everybody’s concern.”
   The port is undergoing a rapid expansion as it prepares for the U.S. government's transfer of all military operations and personnel from Okinawa, Japan to Guam set to start in 2010. In May, Guam's Gov. Felix Camacho sign a $195 million 2007 Master Plan outlining the Guam Port Authority's long-term modernization plans in light of the U.S. military buildup.
   The $13 billion relocation of 8,000 U.S. Marines and 9,000 dependents from Okinawa is expected to double traffic through the Guam port, an increase many fear the port's infrastructure would not be able to handle without serious modernization.
   Guerrero, who has also served as chairman of the Guam Chamber of Commerce Maritime Affairs Committee, will start the $88,000-a-year general manager position in August. He will take over from interim general manager Carlos Salas, who was appointed in February following the abrupt January resignation of former port general manager Kenneth Tagawa after only seven months on the job.
