The rescue occurred Sunday, when NYK's South Islander, a 18,174-ton multipurpose containership, aided the stricken fishing vessel Daiichi Shoei Maru as it was en route from Yokohama to Honiara, Solomon Islands.
The fishing vessel requested the rescue after its engine room caught fire, NYK said. The abandoned crew were in life rafts a safe distance from the burning Daiichi Shoei Maru. All 27 fishermen were then transferred to the South Islander that night and are onboard the South Islander, which is continuing to Honiara.
