Fire breaks out on Fugro offshore support vessel

The 84-member crew of the Fugro Symphony was evacuated after a fire broke out on the ship early Wednesday morning.    The offshore support vessel Fugro Symphony caught fire at around 2:30 a.m. local time Wednesday morning while docked at the port of Peterhead in Scotland, UK. A statement from Fugro N.V. confirmed that 84 crew members were evacuated from the ship and no injuries were sustained as a result of the fire.
   According to the Dutch multinational company, “Emergency services were in attendance and the fire was extinguished. The fire was contained in a small area of the vessel.”
   BBC reported the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene around 3 a.m. and were able to control the blaze within about two hours.
   The cause of the fire is still unknown, but initial findings indicate that it began in an electrical switch room in the lower decks of the ship.
   The Bahamas-flagged Fugro Symphony is a purpose-built marine support vessel designed for servicing remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROV). ROVs are commonly used in deep water construction, surveying and offshore hydrocarbon extraction. 
   Fugro said the 84-member crew, “returned to the vessel once it was confirmed safe to do so,” and that “a Fugro team is onboard to investigate the cause of the incident.”
