BMW expands parts distribution deal with K + N

Swiss-based third-party logistics provider Kuehne + Nagel will operate the auto maker’s new global spare parts distribution center in Wallersdorf, Germany, which was inaugurated yesterday, the company said in a statement.    The BMW Group is expanding its spare parts transportation and distribution services contract with Kuehne + Nagel, the Swiss-based third-party logistics provider said in a statement.
   K + N will operate the auto maker’s new 35,000-square-meter global parts distribution center in Wallersdorf, Germany, which was inaugurated yesterday.
   The company will be responsible for receiving and administering incoming goods, pre-packaging, administering packaging materials and empties, and loading parts onto shuttles destined for field warehouses, external workshops and other DCs.
   Along with BMW’s “Dynamics Center” in Dingolfing and a warehouse in Bruckberg – also operated by K + N – the Wallersdorf facility forms part of the group’s Central Distribution Center (CDC). The CDC supplies regional parts distribution centers around the world, which in turn supply local authorized BMW repair shops.
   K + N estimates more than 215,000 packaged spare parts will leave the distribution center on average every day. The 3PL will employ around 450 people at the center when it opens for business in December 2016.
   Gianfranco Sgro, member of the Management Board of Kuehne + Nagel International AG responsible for contract logistics, said the automotive industry is a strategic focus area for Kuehne + Nagel.
   “We are delighted to be able to provide our competence in spare parts logistics to our longstanding customer BMW Group at another site,” Sgro said.
   BMW Group has contracted with K + N for spare parts logistics services for more than 10 years.
