Charleston-Savannah port detente?

   A report in the Thursday Atlanta Journal-Constitution said the governors of Georgia and South Carolina “appear to have calmed an interstate rivalry over dredging the Port of Savannah.”
   Last month the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control said it planned to deny a permit to the Army Corps of Engineers to deepen the Savannah River.
   The newspaper said over lunch last week in Columbia, S.C. Gov.
Nikki Haley and Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal discussed the port, and “Haley has since softened her public stance on the issue.”
   It quoted Deal as saying he was “looking forward to a great cooperative effort with Governor Haley. I think we do have opportunities for us at the Savannah port and for them at the Charleston port. I don’t think they’re inconsistent projects. In fact I think they’re very compatible projects. I was encouraged by our meetings.”
